The Reality

The Employment Gap After Incarceration

Formerly incarcerated individuals face significant barriers to employment, with an estimated 60% unemployed at any given time and an overall unemployment rate exceeding 27% nearly five times higher than that of the general population (Prison Policy Initiative). Long term instability remains a major challenge, as only about 40% maintain consistent employment within four years of release, while one study found that 33% of individuals did not secure any employment at all during that period (Bureau of Justice Statistics). Even among those who do find work, employment is often short-lived, with individuals working only 58% of the time and holding an average of 3.4 jobs over four years (Urban Institute).
